How to enjoy eating wasabi

Types of wasabi

Wasabi is a condiment used in Japanese dishes such as sushi, sashimi, and soba.

Recently it is also used in Western dishes (French, etc.) like roast beef and various sauces. Because wasabi has a bacteria-killing effect, eating it along with raw items is thought to be beneficial.

However, wasabi also has a spiciness that makes even adults tear up if too much is eaten at a time. One must be careful not to use too much at a time, or using it when children will also be eating a dish.

When you use just the right amount of wasabi, it dispels any raw odors and the blend of flavors of the wasabi and the other ingredients can be enjoyed.

Recommended ways to eat wasabi

1. Sashimi

In Japan, eating sashimi with soy sauce and wasabi is a very standard way to eat it.
If you mix wasabi with soy sauce, the wasabi will lose its zest. To make sashimi even more delicious, wasabi should be placed directly on the sashimi, and the sashimi dipped in soy sauce to enjoy the full flavor of the sashimi that is accentuated by the tang of the wasabi.

2. Sushi

If you go to a sushi restaurant in Japan, unless you specifically request “no wasabi”, almost all sushi comes with a dollop of wasabi between the “shari” (rice) and “neta” (slice of fish or seafood).

The sushi can be dipped in soy sauce as is, or if there isn’t enough wasabi for your liking, you can add some wasabi on top of the seafood slice when you eat it.

3. Roast beef, steak

Eating roast beef with wasabi is like eating it with a spice like mustard.

Also if you prepare wasabi mixed with soy sauce as a separate sauce from your main steak sauce, you can enjoy a different tastiness in your steak. We also recommend it as a sauce for hamburgers.

4. Avocado

As with sashimi, enjoy eating it with soy sauce and wasabi.

The creaminess of the avocado with the tanginess of the wasabi makes for an enjoyable and refreshing appetizer.
